Offsetting (netting) assets and liabilities is an important aspect of presentation in financial statements. The differences in the offsetting requirements in U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (U.S. GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) account for a significant difference in the amounts presented in statements of financial position prepared in accordance with U.S. GAAP and in the amounts presented in those statements prepared in accordance with IFRS for certain institutions.
